The Southbridge Fire Station does not meet the needs of a 21st century fire department. The station was constructed in 1899 for a volunteer department utilizing horse-drawn equipment. Today, the Southbridge Fire Department is comprised of 27 career firefighters and 6 call firefighters who responded to 3356 calls in 2017. Trucks and equipment barely fit through the doors, decontamination of trucks and gear is done outdoors, and the building does not meet many local, state and federal codes including ADA accessibility.
